I was in Durango, Colorado once and set myself up to shoot the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge as it left town. I caught engine #473 just as it crossed a bridge on the outskirts, and ended up with a very nice black & white 35mm photo. When I began painting, I wanted to see if I could give color to that old photo and this is one of two results. The other is a watercolor pencil drawing also shown on this site. The locomotive shown is a K-28 “Mikado” type, and was formerly owned and operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western, the great narrow gauge railroad empire of the American West.
