This one is for anyone who had to fight hard to get home. Damaged, injured, fuel gauges on empty, the pilot of a land-based F4U Corsair has miraculously found a carrier amid squalls and darkening skies. In his exhausted and increasingly desperate state his approach is bad, and the Landing Signals Officer frantically indicates a go-around with a “wave off”. But he has no option; his plane won’t fly much longer and he has to roll the dice on a crash landing. He can’t wave off.
